HEMOPHILIA

Some people are born with a condition that keeps

their blood from clotting at all. Their bodies do not

make clotting proteins. This condition is called

hemophilia. People with hemophilia could

bleed to death if they get a nosebleed—

or even a tiny scrape.

The study of blood is called hematology.

Many other words that start with hema- or

hemo- are blood related too. Hemorrhage, for

example, means to bleed out of control. Hemostasis

means to stop bleeding. A hematoma is a bruise. And a

hemophobic is someone who is horribly afraid of blood.
